Spanish VS. English in Latin America
A major concern for many who are considering a move or retirement in Latin America is whether or not they will need to learn Spanish to function on daily basis. The simple answer is no.
The mother language in most of Latin America is Spanish or Portuguese. The second most popular language throughout Latin America is English. In real figures, the number of Latin Americans who say that they either understand or speak English well is roughly 34 million. Though it may be wise for a retiree to know some Spanish, it is clearly far from a requirement.
Most developers who build affordable retirement properties in Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and much of Latin America consider the importance of making retirees feel comfortable in their surroundings. With that said, having a management and sales team that speaks English is usually right at the top of the list of important requirements when working with a potential retiree.
Latin America and Affordable Retirement
Latin America offers a low cost of retirement living. With real estate prices ranging from 20% to 60% of those in the United States, the actual cost of buying a home is significantly lower throughout Latin America. A retiree can expect to see significant cost savings in real estate costs alone.
Medical care is an important issue when considering an affordable retirement location. Medical care in Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and much of Latin America is also considerably more affordable than in the United States. Many retirees are surprised to learn that much of Latin America has a high quality medical care that rivals most of the world. A retiree can expect significant cost savings on medical prescriptions, general medical care and surgeries. In fact, medical treatment and prescription drugs are so affordable that each year thousands of Americans and Canadians travel to countries like Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama for low cost medical care.
